Paris Hilton’s bunionettes

Bunionettes, sometimes referred to as tailor’s bunions, are a deformity of the fifth metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint that is analogous to a bunion (hallux valgus) deformity of the great toe. This is a very common problem that podiatrists see every day. This problem is also suffered by the famous actress Paris Hilton. A bunionette is characterized by prominence of the lateral aspect of the fifth metatarsal head and a hammertoe of the small toe.

Symptoms associated with a bunionette are irritation when wearing tight, narrow, pointed-toe shoes. Usually patients report pain and problems finding comfortable shoes. In the majority of the cases the symtoms and deformity get progressively worse, and in the end stages of this deformity a painful overlying hard corn is frequently present.

There are many treatment options for this annoying symptoms. The curative treatment for this condition requires a simple surgical correction of the bunionette deformity that is performed in an outpatient setting. Surgical treatment will reverse the deformity creating a straighter foot.

Conservative treatments will relieve the pressure and pain but will not reverse or stop the progression of the deformity. Conservative treatments include proper shoes with a soft upper and a roomy toe box. A custom made insert with a metatarsal pad also can help shift pressure off the fifth metatarsal head. Pads can be applied to the lateral aspect of the toe box to float the painful fifth metatarsal head. This orthotic device rotates the forefoot slightly, which decreases direct pressure over the bunionette prominence.

Shaq foot surgery

In 2002, Shaquille O’Neal was suffering from great toe arthritis. In September 2002, Shaq received a 1st MPJ fusion. The goal of this surgery was to immobilize the joint to prevent pain and keep the basketball player functional.

The procedure took only 45 minutes, and it was performed on an outpatient basis. A six-week rehabilitation program had O’Neal ready to play ball a week before the regular season began. The typical patient who receives this procedure can return to work in 3 weeks.

Salsa dancing shoes

salsa-1

Salsa dancing gives your muscles, joints, and bones a really good workout. It can help delay osteoporosis and arthritis.

salsa-2

Salsa dancing shoes should be stylish (of course), lightweight, comfortable, flexible, made of real suede and/or leather, and extra cushioning in the sole.

The foot should have more freedom of movement while keeping the heel “locked” in place.

leather-soles

Leather/suede soles to give enough amount of slip-and-grip while allowing your foot to pivot freely. Avoid rubber-soled shoes.

The dance shoe size should be the same as your street shoe size. If your foot is narrow, you should go down 1/2 a size. If your foot is wider you should go up 1/2 a size.

men-shoes

Gentlemen typically wear suede or leather shoes with a low heel. For Latin Ballroom the heel should be slightly higher.

For ladies, an open toe heel or strappy sandal is best for the Latin and Salsa dancing. This allows greater movement of the toes, while giving balance and creating a clean leg line.

high-heels

Traditional Ankle Strap provides the least amount of foot security. X-Strap (around arch) are great for newer dancers, this strap style anchors your foot to the arch of the shoe, avoiding ankle twisting and providing an ideal amount of support and stability.

heels

Heel sizes can be as low as 0.5″ or as high as 4″. The most common heel sizes are between 2″-3″. Higher heels give more shape to the leg. For beginners, it is recommended to start with a 2.5″ heel height.

stilettos

The skinny stiletto heel cause more pressure to the ball of the foot and less balance. Cuban heels are the lowest and thickest heels and distribute weight over more of the foot. The flare heel has a skinny center with a slightly flares out out the bottom, providing a bit more stability over the stiletto heel.
